Peter Stewart

Director, Resource Economist

Peter Stewart worked for more than 30 years as an energy, commodities and environmental analyst, before becoming a work and careers coach. He has served on the Managing Council of the British Institute of Energy Economics, and he has written for the BIEE about the challenges facing the energy workforce. For the last decade or so he has run his own training and consulting firm Resource Economist Ltd which provides training courses on energy and the energy transition, including sustainability strategies and the impact of climate change on commodities. In 2021, after the Covid lockdown, he started Coachcreates Ltd to provide creative coaching for transitions. He works creatively with individuals to help them develop their sense of purpose and agency, primarily in the field of work and careers. In the past, Peter was managing director of Interfax Europe Ltd, a director at Standard & Poor’s Global Commodities (formerly Platts), and a principal consultant at KBC Advanced Technology. He has also worked as a business journalist and economics writer at Reuters, Euromoney and FT magazines.

David started working in the City of London in 1987 initially for the London Traded Options Market, a division of the London Stock Exchange, before moving to Wise Speke stockbrokers in 1992. After 5 years broking equity futures and options David moved to the International Petroleum Exchange (IPE) in 1997. After leaving the IPE, David set up Ridgeway Energy Consultancy Ltd offering independent energy trading and risk management advice and associated services to the international energy community and has continued to work worldwide.

Training

At the IPE David was Managing Director of IPE Training Ltd, the training subsidiary of the IPE, establishing it as a worldwide provider of quality energy consulting and related training courses.

David has lectured on energy topics throughout Europe, China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Dubai, and USA. In addition to the consulting and training role at the IPE David played a key role in developing and marketing a number of futures and OTC contracts including Brent crude oil, international coal and EU emissions.

David has provided training to various organisations on general energy and energy trading issues including futures and options, price risk management, refining, technical analysis and trading controls.

Clients have included: Intercontinental Exchange (ICE); New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX); LCH.Clearnet; NYSELiffe; GlobalCoal; Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE); China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC); Unipec; Jifeng Petroleum Consulting Ltd; Tianjin Property Rights Exchange; and China National Petroleum Corporaion (CNPC).

Consulting

David’s consulting assignments have included:

    • Product development advice and marketing services to;
      1. an Asian commodity futures exchange;
      2. the largest independent European clearing house; and
      3. a North American energy exchange.
    • Advising a number of emerging commodity/energy exchanges and OTC markets.
    • Designing an OTC clearing service for the coffee, sugar, cocoa and wheat markets.
    • Designing three futures contracts for the coal markets.
    • Advising a national oil company on price risk management issues.
    • Providing marketing services and market intelligence for an independent energy broker.
    • Management consultancy to an energy training and conference provider specialising in the Russia and FSU markets.
