Our Approach to Training

Resource Economist offers courses covering the spectrum of energy from crude oil and natural gas to renewables, electricity and energy storage and the fuels of the future. Our courses are highly interactive, and supported by excellent training materials that can be downloaded and kept. Online and (where possible) classroom tuition is supplemented by exercises, simulations and team games that allow course delegates to get to know each other and to maximize the professional and social benefits of the courses. Courses are delivered by Resource Economist founder and director Peter Stewart, and/or a group of experienced associates.

Skills Gap Challenges Energy Majors

New graduates are shunning the oil and gas industry in droves, despite the lure of good salaries. What can the industry do to attract top talent?

Interview: CTEC Energy

We interviewed Mike Burns at CTEC Energy in Newhaven Port. The gasifier project converts plastics and biomass into electricity and heat with significantly lower emissions than a traditional incinerator.

Energy Journal – Nov 2020

The latest Energy Journal from the International Association of Energy Economics has landed on my doormat with a loud thud. The latest issue is 312 pages long. In Volume 41, Number 6, I was struck by the paper Are Energy Executives Rewarded For Luck? by Lucas Davis...

Crude Oil and Refined Products

Our courses on crude oil and refined products cover upstream, midstream and downstream and focus on the commercial aspects of the oil value chain. We provide high-level courses on the fundamentals of oil and gas, as well as in-depth courses on crude oil valuation and pricing; refined products trading, pricing, specifications and valuation; the refining landscape and technologies; and the logistics of oil transportation including shipping and freight economics. Peter worked for nearly 20 years with energy and commodities pricing agency Platts, now S&P Gloabl Platts, and is an expert on commodity pricing mechanisms. Gas Economics: LNG, NGLs, LPG

Gas and renewables have been hailed by the energy majors as a golden combination to address energy demand needs and climate pressures. Our courses provide high-level overviews of gas economics, as well as in-depth courses on gas pricing, the gas trading hubs, LNG economics and markets, and the value-chains for LNG, NGLs and LPG. As the LNG market becomes increasingly global, we also  provide data-focussed courses on gas market fundamentals, tracking supply and demand trends in Europe and Russia, Asia-Pacific, the Americas and Middle East/Africa. Peter was the editor of the analytical newsletter Global Gas Analytics and its supplement Power Fuel Tracker and has written extensively about the gas market for OIES and others.

Energy Transition and Renewables

Resource Economist provides courses on the Energy Transition including renewable energies such as solar, wind and geothermal, energy storage and future fuels such as hydrogen, biofuels and nuclear. This is the most dynamic growth area for jobs in energy, and relevant to both investors and entrepreneurs entering the industry as well as experienced professionals in traditional energies who want to re-envision their pathway in energy. High-level courses on the economics of renewables are provided by Peter Stewart, while in-depth courses on specific technologies are delivered through associates. Peter set up the monthly Power Fuels Tracker for Interfax, providing analysis of fuel substitution trends and the economics of competing fuels for the power sector including comparisons of the economics of coal, gas and renewables.

Energy Data and Forecasting

The energy data world is exploding as new technologies such as blockchain transform the way that oil and gas are traded, and as new technologies at the grid edge transform the way that consumers engage with electricity suppliers. Resource Economist provides high-level courses on the availability and reliability of energy data, including how to use the datasets published by the IEA, IEF/JODI and other multi-lateral institutions, as well as how to handle and evaluate national source data of varying quality. We also offer more in-depth courses on forecasting prices for crude oil, refined products, natural gas/LNG and renewables, using fundamental, technical and econometric analysis. As Big Data becomes more important in the energy sector, we also aim to offer courses on Data Analytics through selected associates.

Skills Development and Mindsets

As the energy transition transforms the legacy systems that have delivered energy for the last century, we believe that the skills needed by the energy sector of the future will change and become more diverse. Resource Economist offers a range of one-day courses including editing and writing skills, presentation skills, coaching and mentoring skills, written and verbal communication, and technical writing for those with English as a second language.

We also offer coaching-style courses on diversity and team-building.  There is a burning need to get more young people and women involved in this rapidly-changing world, and our courses provide strategies for engagement, training and retention of staff.

Strategy and Leadership

How can traditional energy companies position themselves in the new energy landscape? This is probably the most important question faced by any energy company CEO. Resource Economist provides a four-day course on Strategic Vision, Leadership and the Energy Transition that allows strategists and leaders to brainstorm how to react to change, and how to shape the future direction of their organisations in the context of the tectonic and disruptive changes in the energy landscape that lie ahead. We also offer individual and systemic coaching on organisational transformations. Peter is a certicifcated Psychosynthesis Leadership Coach and works with a number of experienced associates who are expert in organisational change and energy strategy.
